Wireless voice over internet protocol (VoIP) is set to make waves in the business telecoms industry over the next few years, a new report suggests.
According to Business Week, figures from ON World predict that the number of mobile VoIP users around the world could reach 100 million by 2011, compared to seven million last year.
Mobile VoIP voice services could generate $33.7 billion (£18.3 billion) by 2011, the estimate predicts, up from $516 million in 2006.
The report notes that VoIP calling is "raising a ruckus" in the world of personal and business telecoms, with subscribers increasingly attracted by its cost benefits.
And mobile telecoms are likely to be increasingly characterised by VoIP services over the next three years, these predictions suggest, citing the example of California-based consultant Scott Goldman, who uses VoIP to make international mobile calls.
The Register reported in October 2007 that VoIP companies may struggle to attract investors due to their low pricing.
