A 'virtual call centre' is to be set up across Scotland's Western Isles so as to improve customer service levels for telecoms customers.
Under newly-announced plans, Luthanet is to establish a new telecoms service for islanders, with its internet-based service to offer customers free phone calls as well as high-speed broadband.
In addition to providing a rival to the Connected Communities network, which effectively has a monopoly on wireless internet on the islands, it is also anticipated that, by making use of the latest call centre technology, dozens of new jobs could be created for islanders.
David Macpherson, director of Luthanet, has confirmed that he is looking to employ home workers across the islands to staff a virtual inbound call centre tasked with dealing with customer service inquiries.
"We will embrace flexible working and extend our customer service hours by having a virtual call-centre with home-based staff in places like Barra and Benbecula," he told the Aberdeen Press and Journal.
This comes soon after it was reported that a new £23 million fire service call centre is to be opened on Wolverhampton within the next two years.
