Voting mechanisms 'could be transformed through telecoms advances'

28/04/2008 14:30:14

Telecommunications developments look set to exert a tremendous impact on the way Britons vote, it has been claimed.

Shane Greer, executive editor of Total Politics Magazine, has said that secure electronic voting systems are the future for the electoral process in the UK.

As the shift to such systems takes place, the preservation of the secrecy surrounding votes is of fundamental concern, commented Mr Greer.

"One of the keystones to the idea of democracy is the secret ballot and we have to ensure that secrecy remains valid," he said.

But as the technology is developed, the security of mobile and computer voting systems should become foolproof, the executive editor added.

His comments came after the chief electoral officer of New Brunswick in Canada revealed that residents would be able to use computer technology to cast their vote from anywhere in the province.

Michael Quinn said that a continuous advance poll would be run between April 12th and the May 12th elections.
