VoIP "is here now"

23/04/2008 13:17:10

Voice over internet protocol (VoIP) telephony is no longer "next generation" telecommunications technology, a new report asserts.

A study from Grant Thornton indicates that the telecoms system does not represent the future, but the present - "it is here now", says the company's head of technology, Sarika Patel, reports Call Centre Focus.

"VoIP has disrupted the traditional value chain in the communications industry with the focus now falling on IP rather than traditional voice calls," Ms Patel added.

The report suggests that the sector is to continue consolidation, with 2010 global revenue expected to reach £13.5 billion.

Migration from fixed line to mobile and VoIP services is predicted to increase substantially throughout 2008.

However, security risks are reportedly set to proliferate as adoption of VoIP technology grows more widespread.

George Derbyshire, chief executive of the National Federation of Enterprise Agencies, recently commented that small businesses that establish virtual offices could find their reputation enhanced.
