Businesses looking to reduce their expenditure on telecommunications could be wise to adopt a voice over internet protocol (VoIP) solution, it has been claimed.
Guidance from advisory service smallbusiness.co.uk reveals that small to medium-sized enterprises typically achieve cost savings by implementing VoIP.
Figures published by the resource show an average 13 per cent drop in expenses relating to IT and a 23 per cent typical reduction in overheads.
The news could be of particular interest to businesses with high telecommunications costs.
According to smallbusiness.co.uk, in 2006 the majority (60 per cent) of small firms faced monthly mobiletelecoms costs in excess of £400 and fixed-line bills of more than £300.
But with VoIP, which transmits calls over an internet connection rather than a conventional phone line, "enormous savings" are achievable, the resource concludes.
Colin Duffy, council member for the Internet Telephony Services Providers' Association, recently noted the benefits of VoIP technology.
He suggested that call forwarding and remote access to voicemail are among the advantages of adopting an IP-based telecommunications infrastructure.
