Online shopping requires the same level of consumer vigilance as high street commerce, one global information services company has said.
Helen Lord, fraud and regulatory compliance director at Experian, commented that customers should learn "good habits" when engaging with e-commerce.
While online shopping, customers should think about whether they want a particular website to store their details and consider whether sites look reputable before handing over any credit card details.
Regularly checking credit reports can help with such vigilance and help people identify if they have been victimised by fraudsters.
"Shopping online should be a safe and pleasant experience for everyone," said Ms Lord.
Some 68 per cent of consumers expressed concern that their debit or credit card information would be stolen during online shopping in a February 2007 study by Mintel Comperemedia.
In December 2007, Internet World Stats research found that 40.4 million people in Britain were active users of cyberspace.
