Unified telecoms 'will change the way calls are made'

14/05/2008 15:46:49

Unified telecommunications is changing the way calls are initiated, according to an industry commentator.

Art Rosenberg, a columnist for TMCnet, asserts that unified communications means more than simply adopting telecoms based on internet protocol (IP).

But current trends in business are causing many companies to confuse the two, he suggests.

"The transition of telephony to IP-based connections is causing the most disruption in the technology industry," Mr Rosenberg observes.

"It is also causing many people to think that IP telephony is the only important piece of unified communications."

He continues that modern unified communications is about advancing telecoms technology, rather than making minor modifications to existing practices.

This is likely to result in calls being made in new ways across a variety of interfaces, the commentator adds, rather than being restricted to legacy devices.

Mr Rosenberg recently noted that IT managers may understand how to install unified communications devices, but that more assistance should be given from outside the department to help them to identify how business processes are likely to be affected.
