E-commerce sales in the UK are the highest in Europe, a new report reveals.
Research from Mintel indicates that online shopping sales in the UK reached 18.5 billion (£12.8 billion) last year, representing growth of 75 per cent.
Germany - the continent's largest country - saw web sales of 13 billion in 2007, while France reached a corresponding figure of 7 billion.
And the next four years is predicted to see sales from online shopping in the UK soar by 199 per cent, reaching 56 billion by 2012.
Richard Perks, director of research with Mintel, said that Britain's online market is "far and away the most developed" in Europe.
"The main reason for this is the sophisticated online offering of the UK's food retailers and the fact that so many of us now more than happy to turn to the internet to do our weekly shop," he explained.
Simon Crisp, director of Shopsafe.co.uk, last week commented that the credit crunch had given e-commerce in the UK a boost as shoppers logged on to the internet to search for bargains.
