Shopping online for holidays offers consumers convenience, one market watchdog has said.
Kate Shipp, researcher for Which? Holiday, asserted that online trip booking services enable users to plan their entire trip away without leaving their desk at work.
Her comments came after a Travel Technology Initiative Special Report, cited by Travelmole in September 2007, predicted that the number of physical travel agents in the UK is set to decline to 2,000 in five years.
Ms Shipp pointed out that the advantages of e-commerce for the tourism industry extend beyond the important aspect of consumer convenience.
"It's also about being able to compare things quickly on price and choice," she explained.
According to the sector expert, shopping online for holidays is "about being able to tailor the holiday to suit your needs".
Office for National Statistics figures suggested that 61 per cent of British households had internet access in 2007.
