Telecoms firms speak out against internet plans

01/10/2009 08:47:36

Telecoms companies and internet service providers have spoken out against the government's latest plans for the sector.

The likes of BT and TalkTalk have opposed proposals for companies to manage the accounts of people who are thought to be illegally pirating material.

Michael Phillips, product director for BroadbandChoice.co.uk, commented that providers and telecoms firms are against this as they have found that trying to ensure that all customers have a "good internet experience" has been a "considerable challenge", users of VoIP may be interested to hear.

He stated: "Not only are you asking them [the ISPs] to control their customers, but you're also asking them to control how their customers are using the internet."

Mr Phillips added that if these proposals are pushed through, the cost of the internet for customers and businesses will likely increase.

Earlier this week, telecoms firm TalkTalk responded to the government's proposals by posting a blog which said they would result in replacing "a proper judicial process for a kangaroo court".
