Banking and telecoms firms are leading the increased adoption of service orientated architecture (SOA), a new report suggests.
Research from IDC shows that about a quarter of banking organisations are currently implementing an SOA solution, with the telecoms/media/transport/utilities sector the second vertical field in terms of short-term investment.
Noting that telecoms is one of the most IT-dependent sectors, IDC observes that industry organisations such as contact centres tend to lead adoption of innovative technologies.
The most commonly cited reason for pursuing SOA was to improve the quality of IT systems, which was the main motivation for 26 per cent of those polled.
"From our survey it appears clear that the SOA market is continuing to evolve as a wider range of industries are in the process of deploying this architectural approach," says Angela Vacca, consulting manager with European Vertical Markets.
A style of architecture that drives use of business processes on every level, ZDNet has observed that SOA is developing more rapidly in Europe than in the US.
