Telecoms services are likely to move over to VoIP in the long run, an expert asserts. Rupert Wood, principal analyst at Analysys Mason, commented that operators are at present seeing other ways of controlling costs on fixed-line options. However, he said he believes that this will change, although it could take many years. Mr Wood pointed to France, saying that services have been switching over to VoIP there in the last three or four years, adding that he expects other markets to follow this lead. He stated: "Another reason it has taken longer in the UK is just that the market for fixed and mobile voice calls is extremely competitive already and it is just a price thing." The comments come shortly after telecoms giant BT revised its plans for its 21st century network, which emphasised the importance of a fibre infrastructure and the speed of which the security industry must get to grips with this technology.
