Brits could be set to pay a tax on their telecoms bill to cover the cost of new broadband technology, it has been revealed. Lord Carter's Digital Britain report announced proposals for a £6 charge for anyone in the UK with a landline telephone. This money will be spent on rolling out superfast broadband, users of services such as VoIP may be interested to hear. The charge will be organised through a 50p payment each month from landline owners. It is proposed that this could raise as much as £175 million and help ensure that the entire country receives internet access of at least 2Mbps. The report poses the question of how the public will react to this charge, but states that it believes it is a "good exercise of judgement". Other areas covered in the 238 page document include those related to television and radio services, with several suggestions made as to how these could be upgraded.
