Businesses considering cuts in their IT investment have been warned that they may be less competitive when the recession eases than firms which continued to spend. The National Computing Centre (NCC) made the claim and stressed that IT solutions, such as unified communications, can save firms money in the long run. Michael Dean, head of marketing at the NCC, said: "IT offers organisations of all sizes the opportunity to reduce costs and improve performance." Technology research and advisory company Gartner published a report earlier this month which advised firms to seize the recession as an opportunity for growth in the IT sector. Ken McGee, vice president and fellow at Gartner, explained that cutbacks have caused staff to be worked up to their maximum capacity. As the economy recovers, MrGee forecasted firms will need new IT systems to manage their project loads. "The danger in a recession is that organisations don't invest in IT and when the upturn comes they are less competitive than others," Mr Dean concluded.
