The use of online telecoms services in one UK city could be boosted thanks to a new free internet scheme. Swindon Council has announced that it plans to roll out Wi-Fi technology throughout the region. Access to the service will be free for people in the city, which could increase the number of individuals using services such as VoIP. Chris Marling, editor of Broadband Genie, said that this will benefit both consumers and businesses. He commented: "It is great to see a council with a forward thinking attitude acting on its instincts. "It will give the people of Swindon another option to meet their broadband requirements, which can only be a good thing." The scheme will see Swindon become a "Digital City" thanks to a Wi-Fi mesh which will cover the entire region. Consumers will also be given the option to sign up for a 20Mb connection, which the council says will be on offer for a cheaper rate than packages available through internet service providers.
