A call centre in Burton that answers calls to the police is to close next month.
Staff instead are being paid to travel to Stafford, where a centralised service is to be set up, the Burton Mail reported.
The newspaper said that employees from the Burton centre are to be joined by those from centres in Cannock, Hanley and Leek.
Workers will be paid travel expenses for up to five years, which is thought to amount to hundreds of thousands of pounds.
One staff member at Burton told the publication: "People are not happy about this because there are people who work in the PSD who travel from places like Derbyshire who are going to have a much longer journey and Stafford is a difficult place to get to.
"You will also lose the local knowledge that people have for this area because they'll be taking more calls from other parts of the county."
