Worldwide sales of personal and business mobiles are set to reach 1.28 billion units this year, a new forecast indicates.
Figures released by Gartner suggest that international mobile phone deals are set for an 11 per cent increase on 2007, when they reached 1.15 billion units.
According to the organisation, the first quarter of 2008 saw 294.3 million mobile phone units sold, with the second quarter predicted to see between 300 million and 305 million devices shifted.
Carolina Milanesi, research director for mobile devices with Gartner, commented that a challenging economic environment may quell sales growth in the third quarter.
"All the hopes for mobile phone manufacturers for the overall year-end growth results rest on the final quarter of the year when most new products will be introduced to the market and the normal seasonality will help boost sales," she explained.
Meanwhile, Emirates - the first airline to allow in-flight mobile calls - has initiated plans to install technology allowing personal and business mobile use on all its aircrafts, the Telegraph has revealed.
