Businesses and consumers in Northern Ireland could soon benefit from improved access to online telecoms services. Plans to roll out faster broadband across the country have been announced. The £48 million scheme will boost access in rural and urban areas, which could improve connections to telecoms services such as VoIP. Arlene Foster, the enterprise minister, said that the news is "hugely significant". She commented: "Broadband is an enabler - use of these new services will enable our businesses to increase their productivity, improving the competitiveness of the economy as a whole." Ms Foster added that the scheme will also create as many as 1,000 jobs, providing a boost for the country's economy. The minister confirmed that fixed-line technology will be used, with fibre optics being the main type of connection which will be available to consumers. Authorities in the UK are currently working to deliver 2Mbps broadband access for all users by 2012.
