The Charite University Hospital - part of Berlin University - is becoming Germany's first academic telemedicine centre to incorporate a full-time call centre.
"Charite is planning to become a leading academic player in the field of telemedicine," commented the hospital's managing director, Detlev Ganten.
With 15 initial employees - among these five medical doctors - patients on home monitoring programmes will be able to contact the call centre for telemedicine services.
The centre is also to undertake clinical research into telemedicine in the cardiovascular health field.
According to Mr Ganten, the foundation of the call centre was the next logical step in its programme of international telemedicine consultations.
