Business telecoms firm Alcatel-Lucent has appointed a new boss. Former head of BT Ben Verwaayen will take the role of chief executive officer for the telecoms group. The Dutchman, who quit as head of BT in June after six years, will take control of the French company, which is the world's largest dealing with fixed-line telecoms equipment. Mr Verwaayan told the BBC: "I'm truly delighted to become the chief executive of Alcatel-Lucent, leading a company with vast assets and great talents, while recognising the difficulties and challenges ahead." The firm has suffered losses of late, but it is hoped Mr Verwaayan's experience will allow a turnaround of fortunes for the company, the BBC states. Alcatel-Lucent earlier this week signed three deals with RTE, to set-up, deliver and maintain fibre-optic telecoms equipment for the group. The firm will be in charge of the project which will allow RTE to upgrade its communications network.
