Mobiles 'could be used for online shopping'

06/11/2008 11:52:18

Advances in the e-commerce sector could change the online shopping industry, it has been claimed.

Thomas Newton, mobile phone specialist for UK Web Media, suggests a new service between HSBC and UK BlackBerry could clear a path for banking and purchases to be made through mobile phones.

Mr Newton points to systems in place in London in which commuters can pay for goods and tube tickets with their phone as a sign that the e-commerce technology could be rolled out throughout Britain.

He added: "… it looks as though banking and making purchases on your mobile is something we could get used to seeing in the near future."

Currently, an agreement between Transport for London, O2, Barclays and Nokia sees handsets used "in the fashion of a traditional barcode reader", Mr Newton went on to say.

Recently, HSBC launched its free Business Internet Banking system which allows users to check their accounts and transactions through a BlackBerry phone.
