Mobile device users are drawing on their handsets for reasons other than making voice calls, a new report observes.
According to eMarketer, six in ten US adults polled by Pew Internet & American Life Project in the fourth quarter of 2007 reported using mobile devices for reasons other than voice calls.
Meanwhile, a third of those polled reported sending text messages every day and eight per cent accessed email service on the web.
Some 90 per cent of people between the ages of 13 and 24 reported sending text messages frequently or occasionally in another survey by Deloitte Development-Harrison Group, noted the article.
"Mobile phone voice service is, for the most part, a commodity subject to price wars.
"Mobile carriers have seen this coming for years, and have tried to get users to use their handsets for other things: texting, sharing pictures, video games and the like," the publication observes.
A recent survey by Entertainment Media Research found that 11 per cent of people use mobiles to access the web, reports E-consultancy magazine.
