Patient care messaging has been rolled out across ten primary care trusts (PCTs) in England during the first quarter of the year, mobile health provider iPLATO has confirmed.
And the majority of PCTs to adopt the platform to support areas of public health such as smoking cessation and obesity are located outside of London, the company revealed.
Some two million people in England are to be affected by the new mobile health technique being used by GPs.
Lesley Mountford, director of public health at City and Hackney Primary Care Trust, commented that text appointment reminders and health promotion campaigns are two of the ways in which the organisation is attempting to build a "mobile health relationship" with patients.
"This year we plan to use the texting in breast screening and smoking cessation. We are really pleased that the vast majority of the surgeries chose to take part," said Ms Mountford.
According to eMarketer, online healthcare strategies such as telepharmacies were welcomed by some 75 per cent of older patients in the US, a study conducted by the American Association of Retired Persons found last year.
