Social networking activity is ready to make the leap to mobile communications, according to one industry expert.
The next significant development in social networking is to involve mobile telecoms, says Rachel Hawkes, co-founder of the Social Media Portal.
Ms Hawkes says that consumers are poised to use their smart phones and personal digital assistants more readily for networking with friends and business associates.
"The next big thing in social networks - that has been predicted for sometime but has not quite reached its potential yet - is mobile," she comments.
According to the industry representative, niche social networks catering to specific sectors of industry and culture - Ms Hawkes cited "firemen" or "baby boomers" - are also to proliferate in the coming years.
Britain has the highest membership of social networking sites in Europe, a Datamonitor report indicates.
The research firm predicts that UK participation in user-generated online communities is to triple by 2012 to 27 million.
