Mobile voice over internet protocol (VoIP) is developing, according to one industry expert.
Colin Duffy, council member for the Internet Service Providers' Association (ITSPA), commented that the technology that could enable widespread adoption of mobile VoIP services is still in the developmental stages.
"What I think will be the proper solution to proper mobile VoIP is a dual phone - an old-fashioned cell phone that is also a VoIP phone simultaneously, so that when it picks up a Wi-Fi signal it uses that instead of the mobile [network]," he suggested.
However, mobile companies are said to be "terrified" of such telecommunications advances, because it would "cut them out".
Research published last month by T-Mobile found that 60 per cent of senior decision makers in small businesses spend at least five hours a week out of the office.
Established in March 2004, the ITSPA represents UK-based network operators, service providers and other businesses that provide VoIP services.
