Mobile device shipments grew in the first quarter of the year, according to a new report.
ABI Research has revealed that there was 13.7 per cent growth in the sector during the first three months of 2008, with 289 million units delivered internationally over the period.
Kevin Burden, research director with the company, said: "Mobile device shipment volumes show no sign of abating in growth, despite the uncertain economy."
Some 1.28 billion mobile devices are expected to be shipped this year, representing a 12 per cent increase compared to 2007.
However, most manufacturers have witnessed a decline in the average selling price, with the five largest product providers continuing to dominate the market.
Smartphones and mobile internet devices are reportedly driving innovation in the industry, while sales have been boosted by the consumer view of mobile devices as necessities rather than luxuries.
Jon Barrow, a senior research with Which?, recently said that innovation in the mobile device market had not yet reached a plateau.
