Free wireless access 'a public service'

06/03/2008 17:04:24

Cost-free access to wireless broadband has been described as a public service by one industry member.

Sophia Henri, PR manager for Cityspace, has asserted that internet service providers should not have an issue with the provision of the internet for no charge as it is a key way to reach out to those who might not be able to use the web.

Commenting as Islington Borough Council launches a wireless network that provides free, fast access to information, e-commerce and other cyber resources to those in the catchment area, Ms Henri stated that such initiatives are an important step towards social equality.

"Ultimately the council has taken the responsibility for bridging the digital divide, creating a level playing field for all residents, businesses and visitors to the area," she said.

According to Islington Borough Council, the area's Upper Street and High Street is a "hotzone", enabling laptop and PDA users free use of the web.
