Companies must practice what they preach when it comes to flexible working, a gender specialist at the British Computer Society (BCS) has said.
Jan Peters, manager with the BCS Women's Forum, commented that firms may find the gender balance of job applications improves when they advertise flexible working practices, but urged enterprises to consider how easy such business models are to implement.
She was commented after BT announced that it was initiating a pilot call centre homeshoring project in Scotland.
"Quite often, once you get into your thirties, family responsibilities come along and although companies have flexible working policies in place, quite often it is down to the discretion of the line manager to make it work," asserted Ms Peters.
Representation of women among academic and research staff in the IT and computer science departments of British universities remains below 30 per cent on average, new BCS figures indicate.
