Businesses should use IT to make their organisation greener and not just focus on making technology itself more sustainable.
That is according to Juliet Silvester, head of environmental programmes at Fujitsu, who explained that only addressing the impact of IT on emissions is looking at a very small part of the picture.
Speaking at the Green IT Expo in London last week, the sustainability expert also highlighted the need of using technical systems themselves to achieve environmental targets.
There are several ways firms can reduce expenditure alongside cutting their carbon emissions, including the use of business telecoms and voice-over-internet-protocol.
These measures can help organisations conduct videoconferences, eliminating the need for staff to physically travel for meetings.
"How can we use IT in order to make changes to the way an organisation operates?" asked Mr Silvester.
"That's more about cultural change, process change and looking at the whole way your business operates by using IT in a different way."
