Online shopping is set to represent 44 per cent of all retail sales by 2020, according to one forecast.
Price comparison website uSwitch.com expects the e-commerce market to experience significant growth over the next 12 years as internet connections get faster and online deals grow more competitive.
Steve Weller, communications expert with the site, said: "The new figures show that consumers have wholeheartedly embraced online shopping and this trend is set to continue."
According to the website, online spending could reach £163 billion annually by 2020, with traditional high street brands honing their e-commerce presences to cash in on this growing market.
Mothercare, Mulberry, Sainsbury's and ASOS have been among the brands to reap the benefits of online shopping growth in 2008.
In related news, Hitwise figures revealed recently that the web incarnations of traditional high street brands like Argos, Marks & Spencer and Next are beginning to overtake their online-only counterparts such as Amazon in terms of web traffic.
