Disaster recovery 'important for small firms'

17/04/2008 11:15:21

Contingency planning strategies are important for small businesses, one industry expert has commented.

A representative of Small Business Computing noted that ensuring plans such as voice disaster recovery are in place should be a priority for smaller enterprises.

Security policies should be pursued by firms looking to protect their data, the expert advised.

"Disaster recovery is also important and having a secondary backup system that is off-site so you can restore the data," she added.

Figures from the Boston Computer Network indicate that six per cent of all PCs are likely to suffer a data loss episode in any given year, while 31 per cent of all PC users have experienced total loss of all files due to an unexpected disaster.

"Losing data that is important can breach confidentiality," explained the Small Business Computing worker.

She said that the impact of data breaches can extend beyond financial loss, as such episodes could impair a company's reputation or integrity.
