The call centre operated by Crimestoppers is expecting its millionth phone call this month, a new report observes.
Set up in 1988, the charity is anticipating its 20th anniversary to coincide with a landmark in its receipt of information from people with information about crime, reports the BBC.
Information from the call centre leads to an arrest every 90 minutes, on average, with a murder charge being brought using information from Crimestoppers an average of every five days.
And as retailers are increasingly complementing their phone services with e-contact centres and e-commerce offerings, so Crimestoppers is looking to match its call centre achievements with an online component.
It launched a "most wanted" web page in 2006 and some 400 featured people have since been arrested.
Anonymity remains fundamental to the way the charity works, with call centre agent Louise Peers telling the news provider that "our primary concern is to sanitise that information so it won't identify any caller".
Originally called the Community Action Trust, the hotline was renamed Crimestoppers in 1995.
