Credit crunch 'boost' for e-commerce

28/03/2008 13:48:45

E-commerce has been boosted by the UK credit crunch, according to one industry expert.

Simon Crisp, director of Shopsafe.co.uk, notes that consumers are increasingly searching for bargains online in a climate of restrictive lending conditions.

The fashion and household goods sectors in particular are exerting a strong online shopping presence, Mr Crisp observes, describing the former as "massive on the internet".

According to the OMRG Capgemini e-retail sales index, web sales were 46 per cent higher in February than they were in the same month a year earlier.

Mr Crisp states: "The future will probably stay strong. This year certainly people are looking for bargains online; they're looking to squeeze every penny out of their budget."

E-commerce companies are maximising their reputation as a source of bargains by introducing discount codes and vouchers that cut prices by ten or 15 per cent, he explains, noting the importance of such strategies as funding conditions grow increasingly stringent.
