A new study is attempting to improve the regional accent recognition of automated call centre systems.
Researchers at the University of Birmingham are asking volunteers from the west midlands city to have their voice recorded to help hone voice technology.
Some automated systems in call centres currently have trouble recognising accents that deviate from southern UK accents, according to the researchers.
"The applications we are looking to improve are in telephone-based speech recognition, with the ultimate goal being to enable people to talk to systems over the phone in the same way that they would talk to other people," explained the department of electronic, electrical and computer engineering's Martin Russell.
Some 200 hours of conversation between residents of Birmingham are being recorded by the university's researchers.
Meanwhile, a recent report from DMG Consulting suggested that hosted call centre seats are set to grow by between 20 and 25 per cent this year.
