A call centre is recruiting 150 agents less than a month after taking on new staff. The Firstsource consumer care complex in Derry revealed that it was employing an additional 150 operators last month. After winning a new contract it has announced that it will be doing the same again and is not looking to take on the workers. Arlene Foster, Northern Ireland's enterprise minister, praised the news. She said: "This is a welcome boost for the local economy and extremely good news for the north-west." Ms Foster added that the announcement shows the competitiveness of Northern Ireland. Firstsource currently employs more than 700 people at its Derry call centre. The company also has a complex in Belfast in which around 500 workers are positioned. Elsewhere, a new scheme which is being launched this month could change the face of the call centre sector. The initiative will result in call centre operators appearing on a customer's computer via video link to deal with any queries and enquiries rather than speaking with them on the phone.
