Consumer fears about web payment security could be eased by call centre solutions, according to one sector member.
Steve Berry, managing director of payzone, told E-consultancy that there is a market for online shopping to come with an option to pay for goods offline.
According to Mr Berry, a survey of 3,000 people found that a significant number would be interested in shopping online if they could pay for items in-store.
Citing research from Get Safe Online showing that 18 per cent of adults do not indulge in cyber shopping due to security fears, Mr Berry pointed to a definite market for a solution involving call centres and text messages to ensure secure payments.
There is "really a market out there for people that wanted to pay offline for online purchases", he added.
Described by Mr Berry, the system uses call centre solutions to notify merchants of the previous day's transactions, as well as text messaging barcodes to customers they can then scan at outlets.
Get Safe Online is a government initiative designed to increase public awareness of safe internet use.
