Business mobile security 'to become a priority'

30/06/2008 13:40:02

As more people take out personal and corporate mobile contracts, the problem of spam on smartphones is likely to require the industry's attention, experts warn.

According to the Times, the business telecoms security sector is concerned that corporate mobile devices could increasingly become the target of criminal gangs who use spam to carry out financial scams.

Neil Cook, vice-president of technology services for Cloudmark, told the newspaper that smartphone penetration will need to reach between 20 and 30 per cent before viruses become a worthwhile occupation for hackers.

"As new media becomes attractive to spammers, they move in there. They will move anywhere if they can make a return on investment," he added.

Vnunet.com recently warned of a scam in which personal and business mobile users were told they had won a cash prize and asked to respond via email, only to be billed for shipping charges for the bogus cheques.
