One in five homes around the world will have a fixed broadband connection by the end of the year, a new study has suggested. Research by Gartner stated that this will be the case, showing that there will be 422 million homes with this kind of internet access, which could improve uptake for online telecoms services such as VoIP. This is up from 282 million households at the end of last year, with the figure predicted to rise to 580 million by 2013. Amanda Sabia, the firm's principal research analyst, commented that the recession is seemingly not having a large impact on the sector. She said: "Consumers may be watching their household expenditure, but dropping their broadband connections is not at the top of their agendas as a way to reduce outgoings." Elsewhere, telecoms giant BT has launched a scheme which aims to encourage regulatory body Ofcom to provide greater protection for landline telephone and broadband consumers.
